Auger
Boring
Trenchless installation of steel casing beneath roads, railways, and other surface obstacles. One of the most commonly used methods for utility crossings and infrastructure installations.
Trenchless Auger Boring Installation
Auger boring is a trenchless construction method used to install steel casing beneath roads, railways, embankments, and other surface obstacles without open excavation.
During the process, a rotating auger inside the casing removes soil while the casing pipe is advanced through the ground. This allows pipelines and utilities to pass beneath infrastructure while minimizing disruption at the surface.
Auger boring is one of the most commonly used trenchless methods for utility crossings and infrastructure installations.
Typical Applications
Auger boring is frequently used when pipelines must pass beneath existing infrastructure where open trench excavation is not possible.
- Highway and roadway crossings
- Railroad crossings
- Utility casing installations
- Stormwater and sewer infrastructure
- Water and utility pipeline crossings
- Embankment and levee crossings
How Auger Boring Works
Auger boring installations are typically performed from a launch pit constructed at one end of the crossing.
Excavation of a launch pit
The boring equipment is installed in a pit at one end of the crossing.
Placement of steel casing sections
Steel casing sections are positioned to form the bore path.
Rotation of the auger
The auger rotates inside the casing to remove soil from the bore.
Advancement of the casing pipe
The casing pipe is advanced through the ground as soil is removed.
Completion of the crossing
The casing reaches the receiving pit, completing the bore. The product pipeline is then installed inside the casing.
Benefits of Auger Boring
Auger boring provides several advantages for infrastructure projects that require underground crossings.
- Installation beneath roads and railways without major surface disruption
- Reduced traffic impact during construction
- Reliable installation of protective casing for pipelines
- Efficient trenchless crossing method for many infrastructure conditions
- Reduced excavation compared to traditional open trench methods
Infrastructure Crossing Experience
Auger boring projects often involve challenging construction environments. We work with engineers and contractors to ensure installations are completed safely, accurately, and efficiently.
- Highway and roadway crossings
- Railroad infrastructure crossings
- Sewer and stormwater pipeline installations
- Water and utility infrastructure projects
- Civil construction requiring trenchless utility installation
